Asa (Asha) is a Nigerian musician and has been hailed as one for the future. Her sound is Afro-pop and reggae and she has garnered rave reviews. Her real name is Bukola Elemide.
Asa was born in Paris. Asa means 'little hawk' and she was nicknamed so because when she was young she often ran away and changed directions like a hawk. She returned to Nigeria with her family when she was 2, living in Lagos (which she considers the New York of Nigeria). Her mother was a shopkeeper and her father shot video reports for weddings and that’s how she discovered music more particularly Bob Marley and Fela Kuti’s songs. She has got three brothers. She returned to Paris when she was 22 (2004) and that is where her music career took off. She worked with Manu Dibango of Soul Makossa fame.
She grew up to the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Lagbaja, Erika Badu, D’Angelo, Rafaël Saadiq, Lauryn Hill, Femi Kuti and Angélique Kidjo, in whose footprints she dreamt of following. She learnt to play the guitar in 6 months at Peter King’s School of Music. Her music is influenced by pop, reggae and African traditional sounds.
She met her manager, Janet, in 2004. Janet introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who in turn became her musical partner. Asa is signed to the Naïve label. With the help of Christophe Dupouy, she recorded her debut album called Asa, which has been hailed as one of the best African albums of 2007 and has won her countless awards.

There is no Doubt about ASA's Success. She's great! I love all of her songs they are awesome! But I think she still needs to make a good composure, Still, "SHE ROCKS!". I LOVE YOU
Asa is a new breed of African musicians who can combine different types of music. I rate her like Angelique Kidjo and she may win a grammy in the future. She needs more support and she can rub shoulders with everyone

Asa is a great musician and one of my new favorites.
Whenever I start listening to her music, I put it on repeat, and listen till I get bored of it.
She is definitely one to watch for the future and she may very well win international awards (Grammy anyone) at some point.

Asa is coming to perform in Naija.
She'll be at two concerts in Lagos scheduled for June 14 and 15, 2008, the first happening at the exquisite Grand Banquet Hall of The Civic Centre, Victoria Island and the second at The Expo Centre, Oceanview Restaurant, also in Victoria Island.
