    Lazarus 'Karandu' Shiimi

Gazza is one of Namibia’s leading artistes and rappers. His real name is Lazarus 'Karandu' Shiimi and he was born in Oshakati in Northern Namibia.

Lazarus Shiimi was always interested in music. He formed a band in primary school.
He attended a white high school called Etosha, where he joined choirs but also got very fascinated with Kwaito. He was also a skilled soccer player in his youth and he was nicknamed Gazza because his style was like that of Paul Gascoigne, a famous English footballer. The name stuck and now it is his music name as well.

He is known as the King of Kwaito in Namibia. His music can be defined as mix of several influences including dance hall, ragga, hip-hop and kwaito. His lyrics are about township life and they reflect the intricacies of Namibian life and strike a familiar chord with Namibians from all walks of life, young and old.

His first two albums released in 2004, 'Tanauka' and 'Zula 2 Survive' made him really famous in Namibia. His third album came out in 2005 and was called 'Stof-lap-Chikapute'. According to Gazza, 'Stof-Lap' is a symbol of a new beginning and a 'Chikapute' is a street term used to call those who have nothing, thus 'Stof Lap Chikapute' means a nobody starting from nothing. His 2007 album '467 GMP Till I Die', which is Namibia's 1st double CD, is considered one of the best albums Namibia has ever produced. The hit single, Mokasie, dominated local Namibian music charts, being at number one for more than 23 weeks on the Universal Sounds Top 20.

He schooled in South Africa (Business college in Cape Town) and returned to Namibia with a diploma in 2002 and took a clerk job in a bank. He also made his own beats in his home. Gazza serves as the Goodwill Ambassador of Education sanctioned by the Ministry of Education as well as an Ambassador for Team Namibia.

Some of his songs include Koko, My father my hero, Kandishishi, Kick it, Karandu, Vuka na 2020, Oshinima, Klaar, Zula II Zula, Lets Get Together, Piki Piki, Tala tala, Pala pala, Thank u, etc
