Hip-hop World Awards winner, Obiwon just can’t seem to stop making good music. Just over a year after the release of the critically acclaimed debut album, Overture containing the massive hit Onyinye, the artiste is out with a new EP, Overture Plus, which he says is a prequel to his full-length sophomore album, tentatively titled, The Renaissance due for release in June 2009.
Already enjoying massive promo nation-wide is the crunk-driven banging lead single Joli, the party-starter that has Obiwon setting off the celebration while dedicating a few lines to address snide comments that were generated by his decision to leave his banking job, to face his music full time.
The EP, a release from the stables of Obiwon’s own JDI Music imprint, in conjunction with Now Muzik, also contains tracks like Nigerian Girl, which he says is “dedicated to his female fans and Nigerians in general, but basically extols the virtues of the Nigerian woman”. There’s also Believe Me, on which he dwells on the strain celebrity status imposes on a relationship, and Love Drunk, a soul stirring ballad, delivered in the manner, only the artiste’s knows how.
In addition to the above mentioned tracks, is the track titled Overture, which in the tradition of his past releases, acknowledges the God’s presence in his life. Three bonus cuts from the Overture LP; I Pray, U Made Me and Onyiye (Club Mix), were also added to the new Overture Plus EP.
Coinciding with the release of Overplus Plus into the market, is the TV release of the Joli video, which insiders say cost about N1.5m. The video was shot by highly sought-after director, DJ Tee. The high-end video showcases the dance/choreography/performance skills of the artiste/songwriter/producer, who emerged Best Male Vocalist at the highly acclaimed Hip-hop World Awards (HHWA) “07 and Voice of the Decade at NMA.
The workaholic artiste is also presently writing and producing music for his protégé, Nene (of Xtasy fame) and Naija’s hottest dance group, Thrill Squad.
