D'BANJ WINS

The nominees for one of the biggest awards an African musician could get these days is out. One of the following, Uganda's Jose Chameleone, South Africa's HHP, Kenya's Jua Cali, Nigeria's D'banj and Ghana's Samini, will be named as the best African Act at the MTV Europe awards at the beginning of November. Freshlyground from South Africa won the award last year after Tuface Idibia had won the very first one in 2005.

All five nominations are well-deserved, they have been among the biggest musicians in their respective countries and had countless hits. I think this award is for work done mostly in 2006, because I don't believe any of them released an album this year. I don't think any of the nominees stands out among the rest so it is hard for me to choose a favorite. Voting is involved so I guess I have to reveal who I'll vote for eh.

I have heard about HHP (Hip Hop Pantsula) but haven't seen any of his videos or heard any of his songs. I don't remember him from the South African Music Awards either so I am a bit surprised Kabelo or Simphiwe was not nominated in his stead. Jua Cali has been praised in various circles lately so am not surprised by this. Samini is still the biggest musician in Ghana and his songs are still in heavy rotation. D'banj is probably the Nigerian artiste of the year and his popularity transcends Naija. Jose Chameleone is always in the discussion for best musician from East Africa everytime he releases an album. I think I will root for Chameleone for this one (because of his popularity and work done) but I will love to see Samini win this one. :-P

MTV NETWORKS AFRICA REVEALS NOMINEES FOR BEST AFRICAN ACT AT THE MTV EUROPE AWARDS

MTV Networks Africa yesterday revealed the five African artists nominated for Best African Act at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs). The five nominees representing the African continent at the 14th annual MTV Europe Music Awards will be upbeat Nigerian R&B sensation D'Banj, Ugandan hip-hop/ragga crowd-pleaser Chameleone, Kenyan underground hip hop king Jua Cali, Ghanaian Dancehall king Samini and HHP - South Africa's hottest hip-hop MC.

The five artists will learn which of them has won the prestigious Best African Act Award at the glittering MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony, taking place at the OlympiaHalle Arena, Munich on 1 November 2007. The ceremony will air live across Africa on MTV base (DStv Channel 88) and MTV European (DStv Channel 85).

The Best African Act was initiated in 2005 to mark the arrival in sub-Saharan Africa of MTV's African music channel, MTV base. The first ever award was won by Nigeria's 2-Face Idibia, who received his award in Lisbon, Portugal in 2005, followed in 2006 by South Africa's Freshlyground, who received their award from MTV VJ Sizwe Dhlomo in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The official sponsors for the MTV Europe Music Awards in sub-Saharan Africa are Sony Ericsson, KFC and Yogi Sip.

I want Hip Hop Pantsula (real name Jabulani Tsambo) to win but I think D'banj would win it. Nigerians are gonna go all out to make sure d'banj wins

The award would be given by judges who will judge based on online votes, international appeal, the actual album, etc

I strongly believe Samini is supported by God and the Holy Spirit to win the African Act award at the MTV EMA Awards. I also believe God has blessed and favoured him in all of his actions and steps.

So, Samini, don't be affraid of what "they" say nor circumstances. You will win in Jesus Mighty name, Amen.

May God be with you

No love for Jua Cali? he's the one who has a single/music video on the latest MTV Africa countdown :-)

Some serious prophecy by Sheila, we'll see what happens. Thanks Keitu for the criteria, etc, D'Banj may have all the Nigerians backing him but I still think the others are strong challengers.

...Its nice to see how much faith you have in your man, eh! We could all learn a thing or two from you. But yes yes, For some reason I want DBanj to win cos he hasnt won any of the stuff hes been nominated for, and his song "Why me" was pretty hot neh! My vote goes with Samini for this one though, BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

Oh , and I was wondering about the name change from Batman to Samini?

Sheila's picture

hahahahah, Thanks Swazibella and Chale. I just want everybody to know how much it'll mean to me when he wins. I seriously hope Samini wins the best MTV's EMA African act.

Samini changed from "Batman" to Samini when he dropped his second album in 2006. Samini is his surname and it means "Rain God" in his native language, which is Dagaari. Come to think of it, it was actually appropriate of him to bring out "Linda". Cos in the song, he is singing: there are dark clouds, it's about to rain, so come to my room and let's sleep. mmmmmmmmmm, very promising and tempting when a cute guy makes an offer like that!!

Ahhh...I see i see. Sheila u r the rockas! I need to give you an honorary Swazi name. Allow me to ponder on it.

lol. pan pan pan! We dont know what we would do with you Madame, all I know is we are keeping u away from Samini, hehe. Hmm, Ive always wondered what it was I liked about dark clouds and rainy days ... :-)

HHP is actually excellentastically good, but Im not sure if his audience expands very much outside of Mzantsi (the "international appeal" factor). Actually in terms of international appeal, I may lean more towards Chameleone. I donno..Im just rambling. I may be wrong, what say you, Keitu the Gr8?

Chale's picture

At some point in his music career, Emmanuel Samini thought Batman (Best of All Time MAN) was too generic a name and that when he was googled, he never showed up in the first few pages, so he decided to change his name to something more African/Ghanaian. In doing so, he'll be following the lead of hiplife stars before him like Kwaadee, Obour, Obrafour, etc, etc. So Batman became Batman Samini and then he became Samini aka Rain God. Funny about the Linda chorus eh, once it gets cloudy, you should know that it is the Rain God's time lol.

It just occured to me that he could also be the Ghanaian 'rain man' after Jay-Z anointed the name on himself while featuring on Rihanna's Umbrella ella ella ay ay ay ;-)

What awards didn't D'banj win? He's been winning Nigerian music awards etc. :-)

HHP definitely does not have the international appeal the other four nominees enjoy even though I am sure he has gotten the same amount (if not more) exposure through Channel O and MTVBase. Chameleone has been around for awhile, he even just finished a mini-tour in some US cities and he is quite popular.

Chale's picture

Hmm, so both Samini and Hip Hop Pantsula missed out on Channel O awards while D'Banj won one. Jua Cali and Chameleone were not even nominated. This is going to be some race o!

Whether chameleone was nominted for channel o awards or not,he is winning this award.channel o awards simply concetrated on the video so any fake artist with a good video would get a nod but this is about quality, popularity in all aspects of music he was nominted for the mobo awards last year, has swept all awards in the EA region and won best african artist in the swedish african music awards and the whole of east africa is voting to see the son of the land beat those west africans whatever......go gooooooooooooooo jose, uganda is ready for your success and CHOGM. for God and my contry.east africa pamoja tunawakilisha.
