Infinity Skillz - Nigerian musicians in China
Have you ever heard the joke that if you wanted to stay or live in some part of the world for sometime, you shouldn't go there if there are no Nigerians? It is because they are so ubiquitous they make the Chinese look like pork to chicken in the meat section. We all love Naija, why wouldn't you? One question I am thinking real hard about right now is, are there more Nigerians in China than Chinese in Nigeria? If you think it's easy to answer the question, let me know.
I don't know if this info will help us answer the question but have you heard about the band called Infinity Skillz? It's a self-produced band made up of two Nigerian guys, Wilson (from Anambra State and Kaduna) and Najeem (from Lagos State and Kaduna) and a Chinese girl called Lulu ( from Huzhou Zhejiang) based in China. There are so many Nigerians in China to have a couple of great and popular rappers, go figure :-D
They perform in English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian (I told you they move around a lot), Korean, etc. I haven't heard any songs from Infinity Skillz in Nigerian languages or Pidgin English but I understand there are a couple. Is it because they don't know it or they feel they are serving a diffrent audience? They do speak Yoruba and Igbo, will love for them to throw some Yoruba, Hausa, Pidgin English or Igbo (Kwenu) hooks in there. And yes, the Chinese girl would be singing the Yoruba hooks and choruses. Then we will have something like this
Naturally, as Wilson and Najeem travelled to China to make music, they were quizzed about how they were going to survive, reach various markets and relate. They arrived in China in August 2002 and proceeded to travel to over 65 cities, immersing themselves in the culture. They took up teaching English, sharpening their communication skills and giving them great leverage to pick up Chinese (Mandarin) easily which they did without taking any classes. Wilson and Najeem are my inspiration, I want to learn many African languages without stepping in class; yeah, like there are classes even offered for them :-)
The most popular genres in China are pop (I've seen some friends perform Chinese pop songs), rhythm and blues (isn't R n B just singing? It is, ask Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson), and rock (I frankly can't imagine Chinese people and rock but I'll take what research says). Infinity Skillz were meant to be different for the start, doing hip hop music and drawing on their experiences and influences. They are like a UN for music genres, infinity of skills :-D.
Infinity Skillz have become rock stars! Their single 'How many girlfriends' reached as high as a UK music Chart (Songsunheard) and topped various radio charts in China. They have modelled for American legend, Bei Fang fur China, Andreas Couture, Saloon Kazakhstan Almaty, etc. They also had parts in "The megwa man", a movie.
Like many musicians these days, they have their own charity outfit.
Check out more on their website (down at the moment).

If they have made it big in China which is like a fifth of everybody, they must be descending on everyone else soon, especially Naija people and Africans.
