The late Lucky Ermelo Dube was one of the biggest reggae artistes ever to come out of Africa.
He was named 'Lucky' because her mother had trouble giving birth. Dube is also a town area in Johannesburg. In his youth, he sang in bars in his hometown. He was conducting his school choir at 9 and singing in church. He tried to start a band with some friends and after performing a play that Lucky wrote, they made enough to purchase more instruments and then started the Skyway band. They played a Zulu genre of music called Mbaqanga. Lucky left the band to join the Love Brothers, another Mbaqanga band led by Richard Siluma, his cousin. He recorded his first single with them in 1979. Lucky switched to Reggae in the early 80's inspired by reggae greats like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and also to express his anger against the oppression of apartheid.
He sings generally about social problems, etc. He made history as his 'Together as one' became the first song by a black South African artiste to be played on a white radio station. Lucky plays several musical instruments.
His album, Rasta never die, was strongly opposed by the government at the time and was banned from radio airplay. His next album, Think about the children, became a major hit. His Slave album followed which sold more than 500,000 copies. Other albums include Soul Taker, Taxman, Africa's Reggae King, Together as one, Victims, Trinity, Prisoner, The Otehr side, Serious Reggae Business, among others.
Some of his popular songs include Hero, Ding ding licky licky licky bong, Divorce party, Number in the book, Teach the world, Fugitive, Sins of the flesh, Affirmative action, Dracula, Cool down, Family ties, Sleeping dogs, Romeo, Remember me, House of Exile, Perfect peace, Oh my son, Up with hope, Fall down, I've got you babe, The hand that giveth, Keep on knocking, etc

It was a jaw-dropping news and extremly shocking to read that a legend as Lucky Dube has been shot dead. It was absolutely unnecessary of the hijackers to kill him, they could have taken away his car or money. My mother dreamt that Lucky Dube has been a preacher/pastor, he'd cut his dreadlocks and was standing on a mountain top preaching the Word of God powerfully. My mother said Lucky Dube prayed for her in the dream.
And guess what, I read that Lucky Dube was an active church member. I'm glad he found salvation before the end of his time. The hijackers will be punished for their actions.
This has been a long time coming..
What else can we say or do?? Just have to take it in our stride..learn to move on. This could have happened to anyone, anywhere.
May his soul rest in peace and may God take care of and strengthen his family.
