We African are so rich and blessed but we don't realise it and it a shame for all of us. But there is still hope for those (like me) who believes that we can make it ...
ShadyMind
Oh yes ShadyMind!
We are very blessed, I mean we have the best weather, best people, best spirit, best music, it must count for something eh?
I have madd hope too and I believe we can make it
In the meantime, we should sing and drown our sorrows away with some African beer!
Reminds me of Benin City,Nigeria 1987.That is where I was when I first heard that song.God Bless Yvonne Chaka Chaka..I almost cried watching this video after so many years.
Jude, it brings back memories eh. 1987 is a long long time ago. The Thank you Mr. DJ CD came out much later so now I am wondering, when exactly Umqombothi was released. The song was on the Hotel Rwanda soundtrack too, more than 18 years after it first came out.
We should all make a list of continental classics and just keep playing them over and over! What would be on that list?
I love sitting back and watching people try to pronounce "Umqombothi" .. the click in it is hard eh? And yet people still love to sing it out loud, which to me is buriful! Its just like me trying to sing "Anadwo ye de" as loud as I can without a care in the world! When I have my traditional wedding, I will definitely play Umqombothi, and have African beer floating around too. Ei, that beer is potent neh. One sip of that thing and I am already talking maaaaaany stories. Love to drink it with my father.
I know from Ghana, there is Star beer, Gulder, ABC, etc as well as bitters like Agya Appiah, Kebacho, Alomo, etc
There are also the traditional ones like Apio and Akpeteshie and the favorite palm wine.
Another really famous one is Tusker beer from Kenya and I have heard of Castle Stout from South Africa.
This is not to glorify alcohol, just to celebrate the diversity of African brewed beer, aight? :-D
But if u cant beat em...join em!
Not a fan of beer myself, whoever came up with the concept did not take taste buds into account thats for showa.
Swaziland : Castle and Amstel are very popular (although I dont know if Amstel is actually South African or not). Swazi Sibebe beer was the rockas popularity-wise, but I havent seen it in stores in a while. Some people drink the Castle Milk Stout (which tastes like chicken pee on a dry sahara day). It has the best adverts though!
But! on traditional beers..there is the popular Umqombothi and Marula brew. the Marula season in Swaziland is very much anticipated, my house alone gets about 100 litres delivered, and that one is actually really good with pineapples / anything sweet added to it and enjoyed cold.
Emm...and of course from that comes Amarula. Now that was just God's way of telling me he loves me and wants me to enjoy life.
this song is one of the best songs of all time!!!! i listen to it all the time when I am bored to remind me of Africa!
yvonne chaka chaka you r the BEST!!!
