Kora All Africa Music Awards nominees 2008 - non-regional categories

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

The Pan-African KORA All-Africa Music Awards returns this year with a bang. There is even a US$1 million cash prize. The Kora Awards is in some legal wranglings with the Cross River State government over their chosen venue, which initially was in Calabar but CEO Ernest Adjovi and the organizers want to organize the event in Lagos instead. I hope these cases are settled amicably and the KORA awards take place in December this year. After all, the nominees are out. You can see the nominees for the non-regional categories below and those for regional categories here. I am excited about the nominees, because I hadn't heard of half of them before, and it truely encompasses groups from all over Africa, irregardless of genre, style, language, popularity, reputation or country.

Don't you just love the Kora Africa Music Awards? It's nice to see them back this year. After the bunch of stories regarding who had been nominated from the African countries, it's down to the actual categories and the musicians who will be running for the awards/silverware. I had never heard about a ton of these artistes and a ton of them have almost no web presence, but we'll try to choose who may win in the end. Here are my choices/predictions.

For the Best Traditional Artiste or Group, all the artistes are from West Africa. What does that tell us? Did Ernest Adjovi and his crew not research into other groups? According to me, Mamou Sidibe is the most popular of these and I'll be voting for her.

For MTV Africa, it was Naeto C and IkeChukwu, for the Kora Awards, it is Ruggedman. How isn't 9ice nominated here? Smockey is relatively unknown and Jub Jub is quite famous for his lyrics. I'll go with Mokobe here, he HAS to win a major award this year. He's had an excellent one.

The only guy amongst the Best Ragga nominees I knew was Redsan. So I will be voting for him too. :-) However, Blackky and Chronik 2h are hot. Redsan shot a video in France, he's big like that.

Bebe Cool is having an awesome year! There's been controversy because his nominated song samples another 'Born in Africa' song. Shasha Marley nominated here? Pleasant surprise. He gets my vote.

I've loved Astar ever since I heard his 'Taxi Driver' track. Bebe Cool is nominated for the best spiritial award too? Soweto Gospel Choir won a Grammy this year and they are totally awesome. I am going to have to go for TY Bello here though, with Greenland

Just A Band's video is marvelous! The Kora Awards got it right. They nominated both Fire on the Mountain and No one like you. But no Potbelly? LS and Ruffino's videos are great and I can't find anywhere to watch the Twende twende video. We have the song on Museke.com though. I'm going to vote for Just A Band for their excellent animation effort though I have a soft spot for P-Square's video too.

Can you overlook Oliver Mtukudzi when it comes to arrangement? I vote Chikara for the Best Arrangement award.

For the Best African Artiste/Group in Africa/African Diaspora, we have some huge names, Akon, Lil Wayne, Rihanna and Alicia Keys. I don't know the nominees from the continent. This is a tough one, I'll go for Akon

For the Most Promising Artiste award, I was going to crown 9ice but Nikki, LS, and Becca are going to be great too. With those 150 million backing Abolore Akande, he may turn out to be the best. So 9ice it is.

Never knew Nigeria was in the Carribean, I am at a loss as to who would win the Best Artiste or Group in the Carribean award. Acho is my choice

My Predictions for now are reserved because i need to make research about all these nominees and then will be able to draw up a good conclusion.

Africans are really doing it big in entertainment! All over the continent, we are doing the dancehall as good as the Caribbeans, the R&B and Hip hop as good as the Americans and even the reggae! That's what I am talking about.
Bebe Cool has done really well to be nominated in different categories.
As for DR Congo and music, that country is really blessed. South Africa will have something to say about that though.
