Black Stars' striker Asamoah Gyan ventures into music, features on Castro's African Girls

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •

Asamoah Gyan aka Baby Jet was the first Ghanaian to score in a World Cup and he's scored another first, by becoming the first footballer to venture into hiplife music. He features with popular hiplife star, Castro the Destroyer, in a classic video, African Girls. Asamoah Gyan is also very popular for his goal celebration dances, some of which he performs in the music video. The song and music video has been greeted positively by music fans as it is becoming very popular.

The song is produced by Castro's Wondzie Entertainment. The Takoradi native has been struggling to enjoy the same success he had during the times of hit songs like Sradenam and Toffee, and this Asamoah Gyan collaboration might just do the trick. The idea of singing about African women is not as fashionable as of 2005 but it is the focus of the song. Castro and Asamoah Gyan sing about Ghanaian and African women. The song mentions "African girls dey be, dance to the groove and feel the heat". "African girls dey be, them be sweet, them be sexy like cheese". It's a party type track and not exactly one that empowers women. Then again, how many African songs do that?

The masked man of Nigerian music and Africano grooves superstar, Lagbja, recently featured a Spanish singer on his single, Did I?. The song received great acclaim from Lagbaja enthusiasts and other African musicians. Info about the Spanish singer coming soon.

Bisade Ologunde is an Afro-beat musician from Nigeria. Lagbaja is a Yoruba word that means somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody. I love his music, especially Konko below and Never far away. I love how he also sings abou social issues. In one of his latest videos, Bling Bling Panda, he sings about how we (Africans) are copying blindly from the West and sings - "Se everything from abroad we must copy?"

Translations for the Spanish lyrics are below. You can find the full lyrics for the song with Spanish, English and Yoruba lyrics at this link.

Zaki Ibrahim’s music, captivating and vibrant, comes from knowing a struggle, but it’s never all about struggle. She was shaped by the diversity of her Apartheid-era hometown (Cape Town) and household, having been born to South African and Scottish parents: “My mother was an English teacher, a poet and a writer. I write in my Umi’s language. Her words have allowed me to translate my experience the way I do. To me, few see the world as exquisitely as she portrays it.” She was also raised in Canada where until now how music career has been anchored.

2009 was an explosive year for Zaki: She toured in the US as well as South Africa, where she supported Mos Def at the international Jazz festival and released her EP Eclectica (Episodes in Purple).

2010 promises to be even bigger as she bases herself in Cape Town and spends time finishing her full length album between her various homes.
