The story of Sarkodie & Yaa Pono - Dr. Duncan's Kasahare level

The most-talked about rapper in Ghana these days is Sarkodie. This may change soon, with the emergence of Yaa Pono, another rapper based in Tema. Where from these guys? Before their freestyles hit Facebook and Youtube, they were turning heads on Adom FM's Kasahare level show hosted by Dr. Duncan.

Kasahare level is a hiplife/rap show on Adom 106.3 FM every Saturday night. Kasahare (talking fast) is the Twi name for Rap. Dr. Duncan interviews various musicians, plays some old and new songs and organizes a rap battle. Sarkodie and Yaa Pono were discovered on this show. Other rappers who came through this show are Kojo Korea and Burbon Fly. Adom FM is a radio station based in Tema and is a sister station to Accra's Joy FM and Kumasi's Luv FM. There is the hiplife crew from Kumasi, and that from Accra, and they may be making way for the boys of Tema (R2Bees is also from Tema).

Sarkodie launched his debut album, Makye (I have been around for long) earlier this year. His single, Baby (my wife) has been a hit all year and is poised to gun for upcoming awards. Sarkodie's rap is so fast, it's tough to transcribe. I personally wondered how he was going to make great songs for radio but it all changed when he made the Baby track with R2Bees' Mugeez. Baby is such a beautiful song, Mugeez shines with his singing part and Sarkodie's rap is heavy and wonderful. Watch the Baby video here. "One time for your mind"

Babe is not the only Sarkodie track you should look for. His 'Politics' track, (listen here) which was released during the run-up to Ghana's election, was a major underground hit. It talked about the various candidates like John Atta Mills, Nana Akufo Addo, and Paa Kwesi Nduom. Another undeground hit was the song 'Altar' (also named God) where he talks to God about a number of issues. There is also the Push single, which was probably the first one to make its way to blog sharing websites. He has the 'Style no' freestyle featuring Yaa Pono and Stay Jay. These three guys will be very popular soon. They have spent countless Saturdays freestyling and battling in Tema and are taking their talent to the public arena. With the waves Sakodie is making, it is bound to be successful.

That brings us to Yaa Pono. A couple of his freestyles have surfaced on Facebook and Youtube and the response has been overwhelming. The next debate will be whether he is better than Sarkodie or vice versa. It will be good for hiplife. Watch a couple of Yaa Pono's freestyles featuring Danso and King Mo Joe. "Uptown energy"

Kudos to Dr. Duncan for helping unearth these talents. I listened to Kasahare level religiously for awhile but have not tuned in a while. Catch the show every Saturday around 7pm GMT. You can listen online here.
