Uuh uuh

Verse 1
Sometimes alone in the evening
I look outside my window
Shadows in the night
I hear the sound of distant crying
The darkness multiplying
The weary hearts denied
All I feel is my heart beat
Beating like a drum
Beating with confusion
All I hear are the voices
Telling me to go
But I can never run

Chorus
'Cos in my African Dream
There's a new tomorrow
My African dream
Is a dream that we can follow

Verse 2
Now when the night begins to fall
I listen for your call
I listen for your heartbeat
Alone, my dream is just a dream
Another false illusion
A shadow in the night
All I want is for our heartbeat
To beat just as one
To silence that confusion
And the pain and the illusion
Will disappear again
And we will never run

Repeat Chorus

Verse 3
And though it seems
(helele helele mama)
My hope is an illusion
(helele helele mama)
My African dream
(helele helele mama)
Brings an end to the confusion

Verse 4
Bawetu we Afrika (Bawetu we Afrika)
Sinelusasa elihle (Sinelusasa elihle)
Igugu le Afrika (Igugu le Africa)
Sizolilandela ma Afrika (This is my African dream)
Siyayibona inhlanzi (Let us sing in one harmony)
Ukukhanya kwentokozo (Helele yelele yelele yelele)
Igugu le Africa (Uuuh uuuh)
Ukuphela kwenkinga zonke (Igugu le Africa)

Bawetu we Afrika (Bawetu we Afrika)
Sinelusasa elihle (Sinelusasa elihle)
Igugu le Afrika (Uuuh Uuuh )
Sizolilandela ma Afrika (Sizokulandela ma Afrika)
Siyayibona inhlanzi (Siyayibona Siyayibona)
Ukukhanya kwentokozo (Ukukhanya kwentokozo)
Igugu le Africa (Uuuh uuuh)
Ukuphela kwenkinga zonke

Is there any kind of music that touches the soul like gospel music?
Especially when it is done by such sweet voices?

This song is a must-listen!
Soweto Gospel Choir deserved their Grammy, more grease to their elbows!

...I have a big one, what's yours?

In this song, Soweto Gospel Choir has a message for all of us and I think we should pay full attention and act towards making our African dreams come true:

Bawetu we Afrika -- Dear children of Mother Africa
Sinelusasa elihle -- We have a beautiful (bright) future
Igugu le Afrika -- The hope (dream) of Africa
Sizolilandela ma Afrika -- We shall achieve with all Africans
Siyayibona inhlanzi -- We see the target
Ukukhanya kwentokozo -- The brightness of the future
Igugu le Africa -- The hope of Africa
Ukuphela kwenkinga zonke -- is the end of all sorrow

Zulu is my fourth language, so please excuse any minor translation errors :-)

that way, you can listen, and rewind, and listen, and rewind, and listen, and rewind and listen again.
Because the song is that good and your soul would want that goodness over and over again!
Great song!

Thanx for a great site. I only dicovered it today. Is Vicki Sampson not the writer of this song? Why is she not mentioned anywhere?

Swazibella's picture

Hmm, I think you're right, Vicky Sampson was the original writer of this song. So many people and choirs have sung it, that her name tends to get shut out in the background. Great lyrics by Vicky though. Where is she these days is she still around? She was bigtime back in the day I remember.

This is such an excellent song, it brings tears to my eyes. Stand up for Africa!

This is a heartwarming song. I think the powerful chorus is my favorite part. Where can I find more songs from the Soweto Gospel Choir?
