Banky W's response to Guardian article about Nigeria's identity crisis

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Originally posted as a "Bank Statement" at http://bankyw.blogspot.com. This is my response to the article entitled "A Nation's Identity Crisis" that recently ran in The Guardian Newspapers. It was written by Mr Reuben Abati, a well respected name in Nigerian Journalism. His original article can be found here: http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/editorial_opinion/article02//indexn2_html?pdate=210609&ptitle=A%20Nation
Please try and read the original article before commenting on my response. As Mr Abati has stated his opinion, I felt it necessary to state mine. If anything I'm sure both pieces are at least food for thought.

Dear Sir,

In the immortal words attributed to P.T. Barnum, "I don't care what the newspapers say about me, at least spell my name right." My name IS Banky W, full name being Olubankole Wellington. Not Willington, as you stated in your article entitled "A Nation's Identity Crisis". I read the piece repeatedly, and found that misspelling my name wasn’t the only error. At it's worst, the article seemed like an attempt to discredit and slander an entire generation of artistes and consumers, and at best it came across as having some valid points but being grossly misinformed, prejudiced, and hypocritical; definitely not what we would expect of a highly regarded publication as The Guardian, or from a person in Mr Abati's position.

Controversy over Tinny's HHW Awards

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

Tinny (Nii Addo Quaynor) aka Aletse Kankpe was nominated for Nigeria's Hip Hop World Awards.

A couple of weeks ago, http://www.pinnaclegh.com reported that Tinny had made Ghana proud at the Hip Hop World Awards held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on the May 16. Tinny was nominated along with Witness Mwaijaga (Tanzania), Buffalo Solja (Zimbabwe) and another called Dogg. After the Ceremony the official website of the Hip Hop World Awards reported that the African Artiste of the year award went to Ghana's Tinny.

Our investigations have revealed that the category was not mentioned at the ceremony neither had Tinny received his award yet. When various media was reporting that the Ghanaian had won the award there was raging disagreement between Dogg and the organisers. Dogg was also reported in other media as having won the same award. It is only after a whole month that the award organisers have come clean as to who really won the award.

"Shake your walewale and gologolo". Do you know who is behind this song? There have only been a few Ghanaian musicians who've featured on Channel O's radio countdown lately. They are Okyeame Kwame, Ghana's reigning musician of the year and Echo, an Afro-pop group who is a past winner of the Nescafe African Revelations contest in Ghana. We caught up with them to ask about their music, references about being a 'Nigerian' group, and their plans for their future. Below is the transcript of the interview.

Museke.com: How are you doing?
Echo: Everything is all blissful.

Museke.com: Can you tell us about your background and family?
Echo: Well, Echo comprises of two young energetic guys Charles and Elijah. Charles hails from the Eastern region and Elijah hails from Guan in the Volta region of Ghana.
