Boonaa Mohammed Inspires Me

Addis Tunes - Ethiopian music - 7 hours 4 min ago
One of the things I love about music is the honesty involved in it.  When an artist has poured their souls into a song or performance – whether it’s the musical virtuosity of legends such as Elias Negash and Moges Habte or diamonds "In the Ruff” like Oddisee – their talent inspires me.  It reminds me of the saying, “To work is to pray” – which means that to give our best in work is to give our best to God.  Their talent reminds me that there are more important things in life than the mundane trappings that so often occupy our full attention.Lately, one spoken word artist and musician has been inspiring me through the pure honesty of his work, and his willingness to make himself vulnerable.  I don’t mean vulnerable in the “I’m trying to show how sensitive I can be” type of vulnerability that has propelled some musicians to fame (READ: Maxwell, et. al.).  It's the type of vulnerability that says, "Here's who I am, here's what I think - and you can think of me what you like."  Boonaa Mohammed is a young man on a journey through life – and he has been gracious enough to bring us along for the ride.  But this is no “reality” show.  No, no, no.  Boonaa actually has depth (sorry Kardashians!) - he is a soul rebel.  He does not relish in or glamorize a troubled youth for “street cred.”  Instead, he is a young man reaching into the depths of his soul to address the types of issues that confound so many of us: “Who am I?” “God forgive me!” “Where do I fit in society?” “How do I share my heart with her?”Boonaa was born in Canada to a family that proudly identifies itself as Oromo (for those that do not know, Oromo is the largest tribe in Ethiopia that has largely found itself disenfranchised throughout history).  We are still trying to get our hands on his first CD - "Boonaafied," to no avail.  In the meantime, he does collaborate with fellow Canadian (of Sudanese extraction) – Waleed Abdulhamid – as part of a musical project: Kings of Kush.  Otherwise, his poetry can be heard mostly through live performances or you can catch glimpses of his videos on Facebook.  Although we have yet to convince Boonaa to sell his music through AddisTunes.com (WE WON’T GIVE UP ON YOU THOUGH BROTHER), we have compiled a small sampling from the Boonaa Mohammed corpus for your viewing/listening pleasure.  Be forwarned - Boonaa has a LOT to say!!!!  And if you're so inclined, look him up on Facebook.  Keep up the positive energy young brother!! Check out:When I Grow Up – a hot musical tune introducing you to Boonaa’s lyrical wit!My Theory – a challenge to youth struggling with personal identity!Dead Time – a poignant critique of Canada’s criminal justice system (TURN UP YOUR VOLUME)!Priorities – a heartfelt prayer of repentance to God that overpowers even Boonaa!
